Frequently Asked Questions

What does a stopcock look like?

A traditional stopcock looks like a round brass tap handle on a copper pipe — usually 15mm diameter. Newer homes may have a lever-style ball valve instead, which is a flat metal handle that turns a quarter turn. Both do the same job — shutting off the mains water supply to the property.

Which way turns the water off?

Clockwise (righty-tighty) turns the water off. For a traditional tap-style stopcock, turn the handle clockwise until it stops. For a lever ball valve, turn the handle 90 degrees so it's perpendicular to the pipe. Never force a stiff valve — it can snap and cause a flood.

What if my stopcock is seized?

Seized stopcocks are very common, especially in homes where the valve has never been exercised. Apply penetrating oil and try gently. If it won't move, don't force it — call a plumber. We can replace the stopcock with a modern full-bore lever valve that will never seize. In an emergency, use the external stopcock at the boundary.

Should I test my stopcock regularly?

Yes — we recommend turning your stopcock off and back on every 3 to 6 months. This prevents the valve from seizing and ensures you can shut off the water quickly in an emergency. A seized stopcock at the moment you need it most is a common and costly problem.

How much does it cost to replace a stopcock?

Replacing a seized or leaking stopcock typically costs £120–£180 including parts and labour. We replace the old valve with a modern full-bore lever ball valve, which is easier to operate and less prone to seizing. The job takes about 1 to 1.5 hours.
