The Problem
A homeowner in Cobham reported that their bath was draining very slowly. The bath had a pop-up waste plug mechanism that had stopped working properly — the plug would not lift fully and water drained at a trickle. The bath took over an hour to empty after a bath.
The bath was a standard steel bath with a pop-up cable-operated waste plug, approximately 10 years old. The homeowner had tried cleaning the plug mechanism but it made no difference.
The Diagnosis
We removed the bath waste inspection panel and found the pop-up waste mechanism was corroded and seized. The cable that operated the plug had also snapped, meaning the plug could not be lifted. Additionally, the waste fitting itself had a build-up of hair and soap scum restricting the flow.
The entire pop-up waste assembly needed replacing. We recommended replacing it with a standard click-clack waste plug — a simpler, more reliable mechanism with fewer moving parts that is less prone to failure.
The Repair
We isolated the bath waste, removed the old pop-up waste assembly from beneath the bath, and cleaned the waste outlet. The old cable-operated mechanism was removed and discarded.
A new click-clack bath waste was fitted with a new rubber seal above and below the bath. The waste was connected to the existing trap with a new compression fitting. The click-clack plug was tested — push to close, push to open — and the bath was filled and drained to confirm free-flowing drainage.
Removed seized pop-up waste and broken cable
Fitted new click-clack waste with fresh seals
Tested plug mechanism and drainage flow
Outcome & Advice to the Homeowner
The bath was draining freely again and the new click-clack plug worked smoothly and reliably. The homeowner was pleased with the simple, modern mechanism that was much easier to operate than the old pop-up plug.
We recommended cleaning the waste plug mechanism periodically to prevent hair and soap build-up, and advised that the click-clack mechanism should provide years of trouble-free use.
