The Problem
A homeowner in Pyrford wanted an external garden tap installed for watering plants and washing the car. They had been running a hose through the house from the kitchen tap, which was causing water damage to the flooring and was inconvenient.
The property had a kitchen on the rear wall facing the garden. The most direct route for the pipework was through the kitchen wall to the exterior.
The Diagnosis
We assessed the kitchen and confirmed the cold water mains pipe ran along the wall adjacent to the exterior — an ideal tee-off point for the garden tap. The wall was a standard cavity brick wall that could be drilled for a 15mm pipe.
We recommended fitting a double-check valve on the external tap to comply with water regulations and prevent backflow contamination of the mains supply. A brass-bodied external tap with an isolation valve was specified.
The Repair
We tee'd off the existing 15mm cold mains pipe inside the kitchen, fitted an isolation valve, and ran a new 15mm copper pipe through the wall to the exterior. A brass wall-plate elbow was fitted externally, and a double-check valve and garden tap were installed.
The pipe penetration through the wall was sealed with silicone to prevent water ingress. The tap was tested for flow and the isolation valve was tested. A removable hose connector was fitted to the tap.

Outcome & Advice to the Homeowner
The external garden tap was installed and working perfectly. The homeowner no longer needed to run a hose through the house — the tap provided excellent flow for garden watering and car washing.
We recommended lagging the external pipework before winter and using the isolation valve to shut off and drain the external tap during freezing weather to prevent burst pipes.
