The Problem
A homeowner in Staines wanted a waste disposal unit fitted under their kitchen sink. They had purchased the unit themselves and needed a qualified plumber to install the electrical connection, the waste connection, and the unit itself.
The kitchen sink was a standard 1.0 bowl stainless steel sink with a separate drainer bowl that had a blanked-off waste fitting — this second bowl opening was where the waste disposal would be fitted.
The Diagnosis
We assessed the sink and confirmed the second bowl had a standard 90mm waste opening with a blanking plug that could be removed for the waste disposal flange. The waste pipe under the sink had adequate fall and capacity for the disposal unit's output.
The electrical supply was already present — a switched fused spur under the sink that had been pre-installed by an electrician. We confirmed the spur was correctly rated for the disposal unit's power consumption.
The Repair
We removed the blanking plug from the second sink bowl and fitted the waste disposal mounting assembly with a new rubber seal above and below the sink. The mounting ring was secured and checked for level.
The waste disposal unit was attached to the mounting assembly and connected to the existing waste pipe with a new continuous waste fitting. The unit was wired into the switched fused spur, and the disposal was tested with food waste — it operated correctly and drained freely.

Outcome & Advice to the Homeowner
The waste disposal unit was installed and working perfectly. The homeowner could now dispose of food waste directly into the sink, reducing their household bin waste. The unit was securely mounted and properly connected to both the electrical and waste systems.
We recommended avoiding putting fibrous foods, bones, and grease down the disposal, and advised running cold water for 10 seconds after each use to flush the waste pipe thoroughly.
