The Problem
A homeowner in Weybridge reported a small water leak from the top of a bedroom radiator — the bleed valve was weeping water slowly. They had tried tightening the bleed valve but it would not stop. A small puddle had formed on the carpet below.
The radiator was approximately 10 years old and the bleed valve was the original fitting. The weeping was steady but slow.
The Diagnosis
We inspected the bleed valve and confirmed it was worn — the rubber O-ring inside the valve had perished and the brass thread was no longer making a watertight seal. Tightening the valve further would risk snapping it off, which would cause a major flood.
The bleed valve was a standard radiator bleed nipple and could be replaced without draining the whole system — a specialist bleed valve key could be used to remove and replace it while minimising water loss.
The Repair
We placed a tray under the radiator and used a rapid-replacement technique: partially loosened the old bleed valve, had the new valve ready, then quickly swapped them. Only a small amount of water escaped — approximately 200ml — which was caught in the tray.
The new bleed valve was tightened and the radiator was bled of air. The valve was checked for leaks and the system pressure was topped up at the boiler filling loop.

Outcome & Advice to the Homeowner
The leak was stopped immediately and the radiator was working normally. The homeowner was relieved that the repair was quick and clean — no water damage to the carpet and the system was back to full working order.
