The Problem
A homeowner in Woking was remodelling their living room and wanted to move a radiator from the external wall under the window to the internal wall opposite. The new position would allow for a sofa under the window and improve furniture layout.
The existing radiator was a double-panel 600mm x 1200mm convector with TRV and lockshield valves. The pipework was 10mm microbore coming up from the floor.
The Diagnosis
We assessed the proposed new position and confirmed it was suitable — the internal wall was solid and could support the radiator. The pipework would need to be extended by approximately 2.5 metres along the floor void to reach the new position.
We confirmed that the existing 10mm microbore pipe was adequate for the radiator size. The floor was suspended timber with accessible floorboards that could be lifted for pipework access.
The Repair
We drained the heating system, removed the radiator and brackets from the old position, and lifted the floorboards to access the microbore pipework. The pipe was extended using 10mm copper with compression couplers, running along the floor joists to the new position.
New heavy-duty brackets were fitted to the internal wall, and the radiator was rehung in the new position with new TRV and lockshield valves. New pipework was brought up through the floor, the floorboards were reinstated, and the system was refilled, bled, and balanced.
Drained system, removed radiator and lifted floorboards
Extended microbore pipework to new wall position
Rehung radiator, refilled and balanced system
Outcome & Advice to the Homeowner
The radiator was successfully relocated to the internal wall, freeing up the space under the window for the homeowner's furniture. The radiator heated fully and evenly in the new position, and the pipework was hidden beneath the floor.
We recommended patching and redecorating the old pipe penetrations in the floor, and advised that the system be rebalanced after any radiator repositioning to ensure even heat distribution.
