The Problem
A homeowner in West Byfleet reported that their electric shower had very poor water flow — the water was trickling out of the shower head and the shower was struggling to heat the water adequately. The shower head and hose were heavily scaled up and had not been replaced since the shower was installed 7 years ago.
The shower was an 8.5kW electric shower. The homeowner had tried cleaning the shower head with vinegar but the scale was too thick and the spray nozzles were permanently blocked.
The Diagnosis
We inspected the shower head, hose, and the shower unit's inlet filter. The shower head was completely blocked with limescale — the nozzles were fused shut and the spray pattern was non-existent. The hose was also partially restricted with internal scale build-up.
The shower unit itself was working correctly — the heating element and flow control were functioning. The poor performance was entirely due to the restricted flow through the scaled-up shower head and hose. The inlet filter at the shower connection was also partially blocked with debris.
The Repair
We removed the old scaled-up shower head and hose. The shower unit's inlet filter was removed and cleaned. A new anti-limescale shower head and hose were fitted — the new head had rubber nozzles that can be wiped clean to prevent scale build-up.
The shower was tested — the water flow was dramatically improved and the shower heated the water to a comfortable temperature with no trouble. The spray pattern was full and even across the new shower head.
Removed scaled-up shower head and hose
Cleaned inlet filter and fitted new anti-limescale head
Tested flow and temperature
Outcome & Advice to the Homeowner
The shower was working like new again — excellent water flow and proper heating. The homeowner was surprised at how much of a difference a new shower head and hose made. The anti-limescale nozzles would be much easier to maintain in the hard water area.
We recommended wiping the shower head nozzles after each use to prevent scale build-up, and descaling the head with vinegar every 3 months. We also advised checking the inlet filter annually.
