The Problem
A homeowner in Knaphill wanted to replace an old electric shower that was producing inconsistent water temperatures. The shower was over 12 years old and had become unreliable, swinging between scalding and cold with no warning. The homeowner had young children and was concerned about safety.
The existing shower was a 8.5kW unit with a white plastic housing that had yellowed and cracked. The homeowner wanted a like-for-like replacement with a higher-rated unit for better performance.
The Diagnosis
We confirmed the existing shower was beyond economical repair. The internal thermostat had failed and the heating element was showing signs of scale damage. However, the electrical supply cable and isolation switch were rated for a higher-kilowatt unit, so upgrading to a 9.5kW shower was safe.
The water pressure at the shower head was adequate for an electric shower but we noted that the shower hose was kinked and the shower head was heavily scaled, reducing flow further.
The Repair
We isolated the electrical supply at the pull switch and the water supply at the isolation valve. The old shower unit was removed, and the wall was inspected for any water damage behind the unit. The existing pipework was re-used but the compression fitting was replaced with a new one.
A new 9.5kW Mira electric shower was installed with a new shower hose and anti-limescale shower head. The electrical connections were made and the unit was commissioned and tested for temperature stability across the full range.
Isolated electrical and water supply
Removed old unit and fitted new 9.5kW shower
Commissioned and tested temperature stability
Outcome & Advice to the Homeowner
The new shower was installed and working perfectly. The homeowner was pleased with the consistent temperature control and improved water flow. The new unit also had a thermostatic shutdown safety feature, giving the homeowner peace of mind with young children.
We recommended descaling the shower head every 3 to 4 months given the hard water in the Knaphill area, and supplied a spare anti-limescale nozzle head.
