The Problem
A homeowner in Knaphill wanted a heated towel rail installed in their bathroom to replace a small radiator. The existing radiator was functional but took up wall space and the homeowner wanted the dual benefit of towel drying and room heating.
The existing radiator was a 500mm x 600mm single panel connected to the central heating system via 10mm microbore pipework coming up through the floor.
The Diagnosis
We assessed the bathroom wall and confirmed it was a solid masonry wall that could support a heated towel rail. The existing pipework positions were 50mm apart, and the towel rail the homeowner had selected had 50mm centre connections — a perfect match.
The heat output of the new towel rail was 1500 BTU, which was slightly higher than the existing radiator's 1200 BTU, so it would heat the bathroom as well as dry towels. The pipework could be re-used with minimal modification.
The Repair
We drained the heating system, removed the old radiator and wall brackets, and patched the old bracket holes. New heavy-duty towel rail brackets were fitted to the masonry wall, and the towel rail was mounted and levelled.
The existing microbore pipework was adjusted to connect to the towel rail valves. New TRV and lockshield valves were fitted, and the system was refilled, bled, and balanced. The towel rail was tested for even heating across all rungs.

Outcome & Advice to the Homeowner
The heated towel rail was installed and working perfectly. The bathroom looked more modern, and the homeowner could now enjoy warm, dry towels. The towel rail heated the room effectively and the TRV allowed automatic temperature control.
We recommended bleeding the towel rail annually and checking the valves for any signs of weeping during the annual boiler service.
