The Problem
A homeowner in Walton-on-Thames had moved their washing machine to a utility room during a kitchen renovation, but there was no water supply or waste connection in the new location. They needed a qualified plumber to install the necessary plumbing points.
The utility room was on an exterior wall with access to the mains water supply pipe and the external drain — both within 3 metres of the new washing machine position.
The Diagnosis
We assessed the utility room and confirmed that a new cold water supply could be tee'd off the existing mains pipe in the adjacent kitchen, and a new waste pipe could be run through the exterior wall to connect to an existing drain gully.
The water pressure was good — 3 bar static — which was more than adequate for a washing machine. We planned to run the pipework under the units and through the wall to keep it hidden.
The Repair
We installed a new 15mm cold water supply pipe tee'd off the existing mains, run through the under-unit void to the utility room, terminating in an isolation valve and a washing machine self-sealing tap connector. The pipe was clipped and supported along the full run.
A new 40mm waste pipe was installed through the exterior wall, connected to the existing drain gully with a rodding access point. A washing machine waste standpipe was fitted with a P-trap to prevent odours. Both connections were tested with the washing machine installed and running.
Installed cold water supply pipe with isolation valve
Fitted waste standpipe through wall to drain gully
Connected washing machine and tested full cycle
Outcome & Advice to the Homeowner
The washing machine was fully plumbed and operational in the new utility room. The homeowner was pleased with the neat, hidden pipework and the reliable water supply and drainage. The isolation valve meant the machine could be disconnected for maintenance without turning off the house water.
We recommended checking the waste pipe connection annually to ensure the self-sealing connector was functioning, and advised keeping the drain gully clear of leaves and debris.
