The Problem
A homeowner in Horsell noticed water pooling under their washing machine after every wash cycle. The washing machine itself appeared to be working correctly, but water was appearing on the floor from behind the machine. The homeowner was concerned about damage to the kitchen flooring.
The washing machine waste was connected to a standpipe under the sink. The supply hoses to the machine appeared to be dry.
The Diagnosis
We pulled the washing machine forward and inspected the waste connection. The waste hose was pushed into a standpipe, and water was splashing back out of the top of the standpipe during the machine's pump-out cycle. The standpipe was too short and had no proper seal around the hose.
The standpipe was a 40mm PVC pipe that had been cut too short during installation. When the washing machine pumped water out at high flow rate, the water was hitting the elbow at the bottom of the standpipe and splashing back up and out of the top.
The Repair
We extended the standpipe by 200mm to give adequate height above the washing machine pump-out level, and fitted a rubber sealing grommet around the waste hose where it entered the standpipe to prevent splash-back.
The standpipe was also clipped to the wall to prevent movement, and the waste hose was secured with a cable tie to the standpipe to prevent it from being dislodged. The washing machine was run through a full cycle to confirm no further leaking.
Diagnosed splash-back from short standpipe
Extended standpipe and fitted sealing grommet
Secured pipe and tested full wash cycle
Outcome & Advice to the Homeowner
The leak was fully resolved — no more water on the floor after wash cycles. The extended standpipe and sealing grommet contained the water flow properly, and the homeowner could run the washing machine without worry.
We recommended checking the waste hose connection periodically to ensure it remained seated in the standpipe, and advised keeping the standpipe clear of any blockages.
