The Problem
A homeowner in Pyrford reported that their kitchen tap had very low water pressure — barely a trickle from both hot and cold supplies. The issue had developed gradually over several weeks. The rest of the house had normal pressure, confirming the problem was isolated to the kitchen tap.
The homeowner had tried cleaning the tap aerator nozzle themselves but it made no difference. The tap was a monobloc mixer, approximately 5 years old.
The Diagnosis
We isolated the water supply and disconnected the tap flexi-tails from the isolation valves. On inspection, both flexible connectors were heavily restricted with limescale build-up internally — a common problem in the GU22 area which has very hard water.
The isolation valves themselves were partially blocked with scale too. The tap mechanism was in good working order; the restriction was entirely in the supply connectors and valves leading to the tap.
The Repair
We replaced both flexi-tails with new anti-burst flexible connectors and replaced the pair of isolation valves with full-bore lever valves to reduce future scale restriction. The tap was reconnected and both hot and cold supplies were flushed through to clear any remaining debris.
The aerator was also descaled and refitted. After recommissioning, the water flow at the kitchen tap was restored to full pressure — a dramatic improvement that the homeowner could immediately see.
Diagnosed scale-blocked flexi-tails and isolation valves
Replaced with full-bore lever valves and new connectors
Flushed supply and restored full flow
Outcome & Advice to the Homeowner
The kitchen tap water pressure was fully restored. The homeowner was surprised how much of a difference new connectors and full-bore valves made — the flow rate had more than tripled.
We recommended fitting a water softener or inline scale reducer on the kitchen supply if scale build-up became a recurring issue, and advised that the bathroom taps would benefit from the same treatment over time.
